September 2014

I am not known as the most laid back mom ever, so one day when I was letting Griffin play in the mud puddles I had to take a picture and send it to Greg...just to prove that I did it!

The end of summer 2014 we had a crazy amount of rain and the Mackinaw was incredibly high.  We drove down to look at it one Sunday afternoon.

This was taken from the van where Griffin and I stayed.  I had no intention of letting him out of his car seat with just that guardrail over the river!

Our house is very good at retaining coolness.  Even if it's not super cold outside, it can get chilly upstairs.  At this time, Griffin was still sleeping in his crib and didn't like to use a blanket to cover himself...so when I put his pajamas on I layered him up pretty good.  One night when Greg had the kids to himself, I kept reminding him to bundle Griffin up before putting him to bed.  Greg snapped this picture and sent it to me, saying, "I'm ready for bed, Mom!"  I told him minus the scarf it looked fine. ;)

For our fall getaway, Greg and I drove up to South Haven, MI for three nights.  Actually, I think we stayed one night in St. Joseph and then two in South Haven if I remember right.  Anyway, seeing these pictures makes me want to go back...it was such a relaxing and fun time!

Greg even humored me and I rode the carousel. :D

We stopped at this place called The Chocolate Garden, which had AMAZING truffles in all kinds of flavors.  Nearby was also a garden of metal sculptures...mostly dinosaurs, I think, but also this big nasty spider.  We took a few pictures to send to the kids. :)  (I seriously still get chills looking at this thing.  Who makes something like this???  Clearly not an arachnophobic!)

The sunsets were beautiful over the lake!

We had brought our bikes along and Greg wanted to tackle part of the Kal-Haven Trail (it goes from South Haven to Kalamazoo, MI).  I knew I wouldn't be able to ride as far as him, so I stayed at the bed and breakfast and did some blogging (as in, the last time I tried to catch up!).  He called me when he was partway back and I rode out to meet him.  I didn't ride near as far as he did, but it was plenty for me!

He may have circled around the parking lot once or twice after we got back to achieve this pretty number. ;)

It was just fun to have no agenda and amble around the town, sit by the beach, and walk out the pier to the lighthouse.

I just love it!  And want to go back! :)

Because I am a miserable picture taker/documenter, I have this one lone picture from Rassi Campout 2014...but I do happen to think it's a pretty cute one!  Uncle Philip and Tirzah working on the sparkly princess puzzle that she got from the treasure hunt.

Another Uncle Phil, this one Greg's great-uncle, was in town and wanted to get some people together to record songs he had written.  Katy and I were supposed to make up some harmony...we were mildly successful. :D  It was fun, though!  Katy, just to get it in your head:  "Oh, I don't want to be left behind when Jesus comes!"

Greg took Max and Nora to See You At The Pole, which I love that our school still does.  They were upset at first about being so early (oops, Mom got the time wrong), but Max perked right up once Miss Brown showed up!  She is truly an awesome teacher and I love that Nora has her this year!  I would be overjoyed if Tirzah and Griffin can be in her class, too, someday!

Greg caught this little garter snake out by our garden...and let Max put it in his bug box. :P  Our dear painter, Steve, saw the snake in the box one day when he was here working.  Being a snake liking person, he brought this big glass bowl and fashioned a screen to put on top so that 'Ralphie' (his name for the snake) or 'Silver' (Max's name for the snake) would have more room.  We were kind of starving it just because we didn't know what to feed it, so Steve also brought some leftover fishing worms he had.  I joked to him that we were keeping it half starved so it would be too weak to escape.  Just after feeding it, I looked over and found the thing up on the lip of the bowl, looking for a way out!  I texted Steve and told him if I lost a snake in my kitchen I was holding him responsible!  After about three weeks or so we released Silver into our timber.  As it slithered away (or tried to), Nora was poking at it with a stick...and it jumped up and bit her finger!  She wasn't hurt, just surprised.

We are so blessed to have both sets of our kids' grandparents so close!  Our kids all love their grandmas and grandpas and I am so thankful for all of the babysitting they do...I could never thank them enough!  I do love this picture of mischievous Tirzy Tunks and her beloved Grandma Beutel.

August 2014

To kick off August, we served lunch at church.  Greg made his usual awesome chicken salad.

My lovely shopping companions!

We got Dunkin Donuts this time...they were delicious!

Before school started, we decided to take the kids to Wildlife Prairie Park and take the tram ride since Jewel and Debby Moyers were the driver and narrator, respectively.

We really enjoyed the tram ride and had a great day!

For their before Kindergarten trip, Steph and I took Nora and Elena to St. Louis.  We went to the Magic House, rode the carousel at the mall, and ate lunch at the American Girl store cafe.

Such a sweet librarian!

Nora's poem:  Cat/rat  :)

She did such a great job 'washing' and 'drying' this little stuffed kitten. :)

Nora's surprise was that she got to pick out her own doll!

We even got Isabelle some glasses!

Nora and Elena didn't really like any of their food, but Steph and I thought it was good.  Nora, however, was delighted with the mountain of whipped cream on her hot chocolate.

Such sweet cousins!  They had a great time together!

While the girls were away, the boys played...Greg gave Griffin his first real haircut!

Greg sent me this picture while we were in St. Louis...he looks like a totally different kid!
I didn't see this picture until I got home. ;)

Max and Tirzah got to be babysat while Griffin and Greg went to the State Fair!

Shockingly, Griff loved the funnel cake.

All four of them went to Hike for Hunger as well.
Whee!

Not sure why we have a picture of Nora in the dentist chair, but she's awfully cute.

Tirzah got her teeth cleaned for the first time and did great.  Her hygienist has a girl the same age, so she knew how to talk to her.  I could hear the hygienist saying, "Oh, Tirzah, your teeth are going to be so sparkly just like a princess!" :)
Unfortunately, Max did NOT have happy teeth.  We had to go get a cavity filled at a pediatric dentist, and I let him get a milkshake afterwards...he did pretty good, but it was not an easy thing.

Nora asked and asked to have some friends over for a tea party for her birthday...so I finally got a date set and invited some girls.
Aren't they just the most ladylike princesses? :)

That's more like it!  They had a great morning together!

Nora's birthday was actually the second day of school, so we had her party early.  She requested Cinderella and her prince on her cake, so I attempted a frozen buttercream transfer, which I had never done before.

Celebrating with the Beutels...she still doesn't like being the center of attention. :)

New things for her American Girl doll!

My brother Nic and his wife Amanda welcomed sweet little Elliot Aaron in the middle of the month!  Greg and I got go see them in the hospital, and it made me cry to see my brother with his little baby. :)  Love them all!

Farrah and her boys came over for s'mores and Isaiah loved Griffin.  Pretty sweet. :)

And of course Greg took them on a hike through the timber!

This girl cracks me up with her fearlessness sometimes.  She is not squeamish about holding animals!  She was pretty proud of catching this little frog/toad!

And then the first day of school was finally here!  Here is Nora's board:
Grade: Kindergarten
Teacher: Mrs. Patterson
Favorite food: Pbj
Favorite color: Pink
Favorite animal: Lizard
When I grow up I want to be: An acrobat

Max's:
Grade: 1st
Teacher: Miss Brown
Favorite food: Jam
Favorite color: Light blue
Favorite animal: Copperhead snake
When I grow up I want to be: A clown

Waiting for the bus!  Since Nora had never ridden before and was a little nervous, Greg took her in to school that day.  And he texted me this next picture:

...and said, "She did great!"  I ask you, does she LOOK like she's doing great here?  I called him to ask how she really handled it!  He told me she was fine and marched right into school with all the other kids.  He couldn't quite figure out why I was so worried so I told him to look at her face in this picture!

And then we waited for them both to get off the bus.  Greg took the afternoon off and Griffin was napping, so Tirz got to come with us.

:)

I love those sparkly blue eyes!

Since the first day of school was too hectic, we took bus pictures on the second day of school.

Which happened to be Nora's 5th birthday!

With a couple of weeks of school under our belts, Labor Day weekend came up quickly!  The weather was supposed to be rainy on Friday and Sunday nights, so we 'camped' at Dad and Mom Rassi's cabin.  Thanks again for letting us use it!  It's perfect!

Griffin and his buddy Emmy...they both look quite a bit different now!

Our potluck bought a tree for Brent and Janelle in memory of Brent's brother, Derek.  The Saturday job for the men was to get it planted out in the Sauder timber.

It was a pretty good sized tree, which meant a pretty good sized hole was needed...good thing they had enough manpower and shovels to get the job done!

Like I said...a good sized tree!

Saturday evening was nice, so we were out at the timber for supper.  We all wanted to go check out the tree, so we squished all the kids into Dale and Meg's station wagon to go down the lane and see it.  What a crew!

Good job, men!  And in 2015 we actually camped in the timber so I can report that the tree is still living and looks great!
